    Fema Magazine

Our signature Fema Magazine has been produced quarterly for 25 years in Tanzania. It has the largest print run in the country. It is a unique resource material that provides adolescents with credible information that is peer oriented. Currently close to one hundred thousand copies of our Fema magazine are distributed each year to in and out-of-school Fema Clubs and partners.

Fema Clubs (Female & Male, Launched in 2002)

Active in more than 50% of secondary schools across Tanzania, Fema Clubs foster peer education, leadership, and life skills development. Club members explore SRHR, gender, economic empowerment, and civic engagement topics via Fema magazine and activities that build critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork, among others. Teachers who support these clubs are trained as mentors, not lecturers, creating a safe environment, and engaging spaces.

Fema Msingi Clubs (Foundational Primary School Clubs)

Building on the Fema Club foundation, the club system expanded in 2023 to reach younger learners through Fema Msingi Clubs. This gradual expansion is now active in over 230 primary schools across Katavi, Tanga, and Njombe. These clubs lay the groundwork for personal development and protection from a younger age. Watoto Bomba is the creative tool behind Fema Msingi Clubs. This child-friendly, participatory manual supports both students and teachers in navigating the transition from childhood to adolescence. It introduces concepts of child protection, confidence-building, bullying prevention, Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Violence Against Children (VAC) awareness, disability inclusion, life skills, and rights education. Trains teachers to run protection desks, serving as safe spaces for children to report abuse and get support.

This vibrant program empowers youth as Champions of Change by training and mentoring them as community influencers and peer educators on SRHR, economic empowerment, Citizen Engagement, and ways to advocate against gender-based violence. It also strengthens community gatekeepers such as religious leaders, influential people, and government officials, to embrace intergenerational dialogue, and champion youth leadership whilst maintaining good governance and accountability. It is currently happening in one district of Tanga region, where high child marriage, teenage pregnancy, and gender-based violence rates are embraced in the fabric of deep-rooted cultural and religious norms. This program takes a brave step toward transforming mindsets and the future of the young people as generational leaders. Impact over 2.5 years: 25000 youth are challenging societal norms around GBV and VAC; and championing health seeking practices; 45% increase in number of GBV cases reported to the police and logged in court; 4,310 (2,035Female and 2,275Male) number of youth, adults and community leaders participated in intergenerational dialogues aimed at transforming societal norms

Based off of a randomised control study, this 12-week extracurricular training delivered in secondary schools, proves that economic empowerment is the best contraceptive. The modules cover topics on SRHR, economic empowerment, and civic engagement. Proven to reduce dropout rates, delay marriage, build solidarity between girls and boys and foster an entrepreneurial mindset. Over 100,000 youth have been impacted since 2013. The model actively engages health service providers, parents and caregivers, local and religious leaders and equips them with active youth engagement skills which enables them to foster a more supportive environment for youth to reach their full potential.
